SARAH LARKHAM and ELLIOT HALL are stalwarts of the Bristol music scene, having played separately and together in the city for a couple of decades – along the way, Elliot Hall garnered the ‘Bristol Songwriter of the Year’ award (Viper Music 2011) and trod the boards of St George’s concert hall, one of the biggest and most prestigious music venues in the city. Sarah – whose claim to fame includes winning a music contest organised by Don Partridge - grew up around country music (her mother’s record collection) and 1960’s folk (her father’s – especially Bob Dylan) and at the same time, Elliot was growing up around Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and (coincidentally) Bob Dylan too. They both picked up guitars as teenagers and began writing their own songs. It was this mutual history and love for Dylan that drew the pair together.
As songwriters they dig deep into real-life stories to bring bittersweet narratives of hardships, travel, work, love and family. Inspired as they are by the folk, country and blues movement of the 60s and 70s, their music is often said to be reminiscent of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny and Bruce Springsteen.
They are inspired by the stories of everyday people –strength and resilience, heartache and loss. Their interest in mental health extends into their work with their own music and mental health charity (Mind Your Music) and years of music workshops in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres. Elliot and Sarah are also music teachers and teach from their houseboat in Bristol Marina.
Elliot is often known to bring several guitars on stage – his beloved, travel-scarred Martin guitar, the Crafter he has written 2,000 songs on, and his nylon-string Spanish guitar (he also has a passion for flamenco music). The two of them both play guitar and mandolin, and their vocal harmonies have been crafted and polished over ten years of playing music and singing together.
Over the past couple of years, they have teamed up with Bristol musician CHARLIE ROSE who has performed with many of the city’s finest and most well-known acts. Charlie plays stunningly on both violin and piano, switching between instruments and back – sometimes during the same song.
Elliot has recorded three solo albums – Next to Nothing (2008) Sonnets and Singers (Mississippi Records, 2010) and Adults Are Stupid (independent, 2011) and together they have released Stick or Twist (Elliot Hall and Rapunzel 2012 – partly recorded and produced by Geoff Barrow of Portishead) and Songs of Hurt and Healing (Larkham and Hall 2018 – recorded and produced by Matt Sampson – Bink Bonk Studios (Kasabien))
